State of Büchi Complementation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Complementation of Büchi automata has been studied for over five decades since the formalism was introduced in 1960. Known complementation constructions can be classified into Ramsey-based, determinization-based, rank-based, and slice-based approaches. Regarding the performance of these approaches, there have been several complexity analyses but very few experimental results. What especially lacks is a comparative experiment on all of the four approaches to see how they perform in practice. In this paper, we review the four approaches, propose several optimization heuristics, and perform comparative experimentation on four representative constructions that are considered the most efficient in each approach. The experimental results show that (1) the determinizationbased Safra-Piterman construction outperforms the other three in producing smaller complements and finishing more tasks in the allocated time and (2) the proposed heuristics substantially improve the Safra-Piterman and the slice-based constructions. 2012 ACM CCS: [Theory of computation]: Models of computation; Logic; Formal languages and automata theory.

Büchi Complementation Made Tight
The precise complexity of complementing Büchi automata is an intriguing and long standing problem. While optimal complementation techniques for finite automata are simple – it suffices to determinize them using a simple subset construction and to dualize the acceptance condition of the resulting automaton – Büchi complementation is more involved. Indeed, the construction of an EXPTIME complemen...
متن کاملImproved Ramsey-Based Büchi Complementation
We consider complementing Büchi automata by applying the Ramsey-based approach, which is the original approach already used by Büchi and later improved by Sistla et al. We present several heuristics to reduce the state space of the resulting complement automaton and provide experimental data that shows that our improved construction can compete (in terms of finished complementation tasks) also ...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Complementation of ω-Automata via the Full Automata Technique
In this paper, we first introduce a new lower bound technique for the state complexity of transformations of automata. Namely we suggest considering the class of full automata in lower bound analysis. Then we apply such technique to the complementation of nondeterministic ωautomata and obtain several lower bound results. Particularly, we prove anΩ((0.76n)) lower bound for Büchi complementation,...
متن کاملComplementing Semi-deterministic Büchi Automata
We introduce an efficient complementation technique for semi-deterministic Büchi automata, which are Büchi automata that are deterministic in the limit: from every accepting state onward, their behaviour is deterministic. It is interesting to study semi-deterministic automata, because they play a role in practical applications of automata theory, such as the analysis of Markov decision processe...

متن کاملDeterminization Complexities of ω Automata
Complementation and determinization are two fundamental notions in automata theory. The close relationship between the two has been well observed in the literature. In the case of nondeterministic finite automata on finite words (NFA), complementation and determinization have the same state complexity, namely Θ(2) where n is the state size. The same similarity between determinization and comple...
